Big Projects / Big Decisions: Should your Community Association hire a Project Manager?

Hiring professional community association management is key to running a condominium or homeowner association – so important, that two of my partners, Jay Cusimano and Jeffrey Kaman just presented an hour-long seminar entitled “Mastering Community Association Management” (a recording of which is available to our clients on demand in ATLAS) to help navigate various management topics, including:

  • Steps to Choosing a Management Company
  • Key Contract Terms
  • What Management Companies (Do and) Don’t Do
  • How Management Companies Charge

In addition to professional management, there are times when the board of directors should hire a project manager that has expertise in overseeing big (capital or insurance) projects.  Sometimes management companies are able to provide these additional services “in house” but other times boards will retain independent project managers with expertise in the particular field or project.  Often engineers or consultants may be able to help write specifications for the request for proposal, oversee work, perform inspections, and coordinate contractors.  In addition to addressing the topic during our seminar (a recording of which is available on demand to our clients in ATLAS), this is such a pressing question, one of my other partners, Lydia J. Chartre, was quoted in an article published by HOAleader.com:  To Hire a Project Manager or Not? That Is the Question for Your Condo/HOA
